Ten young women from underserved communities in Lagos have graduated from the 12-month Illuminating Futures programme, organized by Etiwa Tech Ltd/GTE and funded by Irish Aid through the In-Country Micro Projects Scheme (ICMPS). The initiative aimed to equip participants with hands-on technical skills in electrical and solar installation, including basic engineering and craftsmanship, domestic wiring, industrial wiring, and motor control, as well as soft skills essential for professional growth.

The programme combined six months of intensive technical training with six months of internships at leading renewable energy and construction companies. Participants also received daily lunch provisions, globally recognized certifications, personalized mentorship, and start-up toolkits to support their career or business launch. This approach ensures graduates are technically competent, entrepreneurial, and job-ready.

During the graduation ceremony, Mrs. Jody Adewale, Managing Director of Etiwa Tech, highlighted the programme’s vision: "The Illuminating Futures project was born from a vision: to give young women from underserved communities the chance to learn skills that open doors, create livelihoods, and transform lives. Today, we celebrate the success of ten incredible young women who dared to embark on this journey with us."

She encouraged the graduates, saying, "Ladies, today is all about you. You have worked hard, persevered, and demonstrated extraordinary determination. You are pioneers breaking stereotypes and paving the way for other young women who will look at you and think, ‘If she can do it, so can I.’"

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Joshua Oyekanmi, Program Manager at Etiwa Tech, said, "This project was about more than just training. It was about unlocking potential. These young women have not only gained skills but the confidence and resilience to thrive in industries where they have been historically underrepresented."

Connie Guilfoyle, Managing Director of VACC and co-founder of Etiwa Tech, emphasized the opportunities in the sector: "This is an industry where there are not enough skilled workers. If you are skilled, you are more likely to find good job opportunities. Practical on-site experience ensures students become job-ready and enhances their chances of employment."

Representing Irish Aid, Ambassador Peter Ryan praised the programme: "The Illuminating Futures project equips young women with the skills and knowledge needed to access better economic opportunities. It exemplifies Ireland’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and gender equality in Nigeria."

Graduates shared their experiences. Genevieve Nkiruka Ekechukwu, a biotechnology graduate, said: "The training was very demanding but incredibly fulfilling. I learned a lot and grew significantly. I have truly chosen a career path in this field. I have also come to realize that what a woman puts her mind to, she can achieve, and do it excellently."

Piabari Blessing, an electrical and solar installation graduate, reflected: "The training was very demanding but incredibly fulfilling. I learned a lot and grew significantly. Having studied Electrical Engineering, the practical skills I gained during the training have placed me above others. The job placement has allowed me to work with partners and professionals to bring my skills and professionalism to reality and contribute to projects."

By providing a combination of technical training, internships, mentorship, and entrepreneurial support, the Illuminating Futures programme is helping women enter a traditionally male-dominated sector while contributing to Nigeria’s renewable energy goals and sustainable community development.
