Course Description

This course introduces basic painting and decoration skills. It is intended for students with little or no experience with painting and decoration. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of painting and decoration skills and be able to earn a living as a painter and decorator. COURSE DURATION 6 weeks | Monday – Friday: (8:00am – 5:00pm) HOSTEL ACCOMODATION This is available at an extra cost COURSE TOPICS 1. Painting - Tools and Safety 2. Painting and decoration symbols and codes 3. Storing and handling techniques of tools and materials 4. Surface preparation 5. Application of paint to surfaces 6. Paint Making 7. Spraying and painting techniques 8. Correct ratio and mix proportions 9. Painting process 10. Principles and practice of interior decoration work 11. Estimation and costing of painting work 12. Maintenance of imperfections in walls LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate general safety practices in relation to painting and decoration 2. Know the safety aspects involved like working at heights 3. Understand the procedures and guidelines relevant to painting and decoration 4. Read and interpret basic painting and decoration symbols and codes 5. Recognize and name common tools used by painters and decorators 6. Identify and use various types of tools and materials require for painting 7. Understand the storing and handling techniques of tools and materials 8. Identify various types of paint and related materials used in painting and decoration 9. Know different colour combination used in paints 10. Know types of paint or other coatings that can be applied METHODOLOGY: • Each trainee will be issued with a comprehensive folder of course notes, covering the scope of the course. The use of overhead projectors and power point presentations are employed throughout. • Trainees are encouraged to ask questions and to take an active part in class discussions. • hours are dedicated to theoretical studies and approximately 110 hours in well-equipped dedicated workshops. • Each trainee will be issued with hand tools and power tool required to do all practical tasks. ASSESSMENT This course is assessed through a multiple-choice examination, as well as a competency based practical examination. CERTIFICATE On successful completion of this course, learners will receive an Etiwa Tech Certificate.
