Course Description

This course introduces basic plumbing tools, materials, and fixtures. Topics include standard tools, materials, and fixtures used in basic plumbing systems and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of a basic plumbing system PRE-COURSE REQUIREMENTS & TARGET GROUP Trainees within age group 18 years and above that possess a minimum of 4 credits (including Math, English) at SSCE level. Suitable for people who want to learn the plastering trade, as well as those who are employed in the trade and require upskilling. COURSE DURATION: The course is 6 weeks, Monday – Friday: (8:00am – 5:00pm) | Class size: 15 HOSTEL ACCOMODATION This is available at an extra cost COURSE TOPICS: 1. Plumbing Tools 2. Levelling Instruments 3. Piping Materials and Fittings 4. Valves and meters 5. Soft soldering 6. Water Supply Systems 7. Plumbing Fixtures 8. Water Heaters 9. Designing Plumbing Systems 10. Preparing for Plumbing System Installation 11. DWV Pipe and Fitting Installation 12. Installing Water Supply Piping 13. Supporting and Testing Pipe 14. Installing Fixtures, Faucets, and Appliances 15. Repairing DWV Systems 16. Repairing Water Supply Systems LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate general safety practices in relation to Plumbing. 2. Read and interpret basic building and plumbing codes. 3. Recognize and name common tools used by plumbers. 4. Measure and calculate pipe offsets often used in plumbing. 5. Identify plumbing symbols and abbreviations used in architectural drawings. 6. Demonstrate the processes for welding plastic pipe and fittings. 7. Identify various fixture types. 8. Recognize and properly name various fittings and pipes. 9. Recognize and name the different types of valves and meters. 10. Describe how the controls and heating elements of water heating systems work. 11. Describe techniques for working with pipe and fittings made from PVC, CPVC, PEX, and copper. 12. Describe the proper installation procedures for installing fixtures, faucets, water supply and DWV connections for each type fixture and appliances. ASSESSMENT This course is assessed through a multiple-choice examination, as well as a competency based practical examination. CERTIFICATE On successful completion of this course, learners will receive an Etiwa Tech Certificate.
